Mathematics Department owns three undergraduate majors, including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computer Science and Statistics which are all four years. Three majors continued recruiting students as Mathematics. After the students enrolled for a year and a half, according to their interests, abilities and knowledge of the professional major, combining the students' expectation about academic and professional capacity, students confirm their own major. It will achieve wide caliber training model, strengthen general education, strengthen the basic knowledge of mathematics, emphasize on cross fields major and strengthen practical ability. It implements triage training and multi-directional talent strategy. Cross major is the biggest highlight of the Mathematics Department in recent years, which is combined with engineering and management, financial and other major formation of our school. The number of interdisciplinary postgraduate who is free of exam accounts for more than 15% of the total number of graduates. The number of students who exchange to Germany, France and other schools is increasing every year. The rate of students who study for postgraduate degree in the United States, Britain and other top international universities is increasing.
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is national special major, Jiangsu Province specialty and Jiangsu Province brand major. Information and Computing Science is specialized major construction station in Jiangsu Province. Statistics is new major which was established to adapt to the needs of society. The major direction is the financial statistics. This major cultivates senior special talent with comprehensive ability and capability of the composite cross who can apply the statistical knowledge into related areas (such as social economy, finance, insurance, etc.). Students will have good mathematical foundation and grasp the basic ideas, theories and methods of statistics with skilled application of processing computer software. Students will learn basic theories and methods of statistics. Mathematics Department currently has doctoral station and master station of Mathematics and master station of Statistics. Mathematics and Statistics are also key disciplines of Jiangsu Province. On the one hand, the cultivation of postgraduates focuses on basic mathematical training and mathematical ability. On the other hand, it also focuses on cross-major and cross-discipline. We make every effort to build high-quality interdisciplinary practice platform to strengthen practical teaching. We optimize teacher team from the knowledge structure and academic structure. With the view of reform, we will absorb a number of professors and experts in related fields to join our teachers in different ways and achieve a complementary disciplines. In addition, postgraduate training focuses on domestic and international academic exchanges. We regularly invite international scholars to our department for academic exchanges, offer courses in English and provide capital for joint training at world class universities, which makes postgraduate cultivation reach to international standards. In recent years, the field of the graduates employment is very broad, including schools, research institutes, IT industry, pharmaceutical, financial and insurance institutions and the employment rate is up to 100%.
During 2012-2015, we have recruited 86 doctoral students and awarded 71 doctorate degrees. One of the doctoral thesis won the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation nomination. One was named as National Statistical Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation and four were rated as Excellent in Jiangsu Province PhD Thesis. We have recruit 177 graduate students and awarded 139 master's degree, including three master's thesis were named as Excellent Paper of Jiangsu Province. The Graduates won 45 projects funded by Jiangsu Province Innovative Program, 7 items funded by Southeast University Youbo Funding, 1 program funded by Youbo, and 1 Newcomer Scholarship Prize form Ministry of Education. We have recruited nearly 25 post-doctoral. 18 projects were funded by National Post-doctoral Funding, including 5 projects in particular, two first-funded projects, 11 second-funded projects. Graduates cultivation focuses on discipline construction and specialty construction linkage and it has impact on the cultivation of undergraduates. Training graduate stimulate undergraduate research potential. In the past five years, undergraduate assumed 17 national innovation and entrepreneurship training program, 24 Jiangsu College Students Innovation entrepreneurship training programs and 19 Southeast University based on teachers’ research training projects. We won the national "Challenge Cup" Second Prize and Jiangsu Province Outstanding Graduate Design First Prize.
In teaching aspect, scientific research led to a high level of high-level teaching. Teachers undertook a reform project in Jiangsu Province and won Teaching Achievement First Prize for two times and Graduate Training Model Reform Achievement of 2015. Based on mathematics background, we built three state-level courses, three national quality sharing resource lessons, a quality curriculum for postgraduates in Jiangsu Province, and two English courses for graduate students, which provides a good learning platform. At the same time, we pay attention to the combination of theory and practice. Based on our University Mathematical Modeling, national Mathematics courses and national curriculum sharing resource, under the careful guidance of coach, our students did well in previous national modeling contest. In the past five years, we have been eligible for 11 first prize, 28 second prize. In recent years, we were also fruitful in the American Mathematical Contest in Modeling. We won three Grand Prize (which in 2014 received a top award for two items), 35 first prizes and 55 second prize, which showed that the mathematical modeling cultivation is in leading position and international level and also showed that the teachers made outstanding contributions to talent cultivation and teaching reform.
